A London home gets a vibrant makeover! Nimtim Architects has masterfully utilized color to bring harmony to this extended residence. But it's not just any color; it's the captivating ultramarine blue that steals the show.
The project, aptly named Peek-a-Blue, aimed to revolutionize the ground floor living areas, transforming them into a seamless series of interconnected spaces. The architects achieved this by adding a double-height snug in the center, connecting it to the newly extended kitchen and dining room at the rear.
To address the one-meter drop from the front of the house to the garden, the architects lowered the floor in the snug, allowing for direct access from the kitchen. This innovative solution, as project architect Pippa Grayson explains, was to create a living space that suits the family's lifestyle and connects directly to the garden.
The exterior of the Peek-a-Blue extension is a sight to behold, finished in earthy clay render with full-height openings and a porthole window outlined in the signature ultramarine blue. Inside, the kitchen and dining area feature light blue cabinetry, recycled plastic worktops, and gridded clay tiles that flow throughout the home, creating a cohesive aesthetic.
And here's where it gets intriguing: a benched seating area beneath a semi-circular skylight spans the entire length of the space, adding a unique touch. Grayson describes the material palette as rich and textural, with reds and ochres grounding the new living spaces.
The ultramarine blue frames and reveals around the openings play a crucial role in visually connecting the spaces. A steel-framed opening leads to the two-storey snug, designed as the focal point of the home. Boxy windows wrap around, offering views of the staircase, which was intentionally linked to the home's spaces to eliminate any sense of disconnection.
But wait, there's more! The upper floors house the bedrooms, including a bathroom adorned entirely in pink tiles. This project showcases Nimtim Architects' ability to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces.
Other notable London homes featured on Dezeen include a renovation by CAN, emphasizing a mystical and grounding atmosphere, and a timber-framed extension by James Alder Architects. These projects collectively demonstrate the diverse architectural approaches to residential design in the city.
