Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin REVEALED! Magic Kingdom Refurbishment First Look! (2026)

Prepare for a thrilling journey as we delve into an exciting transformation at the Magic Kingdom! This morning, Good Morning America unveiled a sneak peek of the revamped Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, providing an in-depth look at the anticipated updates to this beloved attraction.

The segment showcased exclusive footage captured inside the ride and featured an enlightening discussion with Wyatt Winter, the Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering.

Winter enthusiastically pointed out the newly reimagined opening sequence that sets the stage for the adventure ahead in space. "What's different here today is the scene right behind me, where you can see our alien companions activating the airlock, allowing us to launch into space and begin our epic battle against Emperor Zurg," he explained. "Fortunately, we won’t be tackling Zurg alone; Buzz Lightyear will make his debut alongside us in this fight!"

A significant addition to the experience is Buddy, a brand-new support robot designed by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with Pixar. Buddy plays a crucial role in readying Space Rangers with system checks and offering encouragement prior to embarking on their mission.

Shay, a Visual Effects Designer at Walt Disney Imagineering, elaborated on the innovative projection technology being integrated into the hyperspace tunnel segment of the ride. "We find ourselves in a scene called hyperspace, and we are implementing entirely new media for this refreshed version of Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin," Shay stated. "We are incorporating numerous new elements into this scene. For the first time, Buzz will be joining us. Meanwhile, Zurg is lurking in hyperspace, deploying space mines that players can target to accumulate more points."

Tasha from Pixar shared insights about the technical challenges of animating within the tunnel environment. "When I joined Pixar, my initial role was as an animator on films like Toy Story 2, which gave me a deep appreciation for the Toy Story characters," Tasha shared. "It feels like reconnecting with old friends every time we animate them again. In this case, we are projecting onto a tunnel, which is a unique challenge for us. To tackle this, we developed a grid that allows us to animate in a flattened manner, ensuring that when projected, everything appears seamless."

In addition to the story enhancements, the refurbishment includes redesigned ride vehicles featuring Star Command aesthetics and new onboard screens that display real-time scoring. Guests will also enjoy handheld blasters that replace the previous fixed versions, providing improved aiming capabilities along with vibration feedback, sound effects, and a continuous laser to assist in tracking shots.

Throughout the ride, interactive targets will now illuminate and react upon being hit, delivering clearer feedback during gameplay.

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin temporarily closed its doors in August 2025 for these exciting upgrades and is set to reopen in the spring of 2026, although Disney has yet to reveal a specific reopening date.
