Britain's relentless heatwaves have left the country broken, bone-dry, and in denial. The unbearable heat, which has led to our hottest June day and night on record, has sparked fires and caused extreme dry conditions. Nature reserves have become scorched wastelands, and nearly 3,000 heat-related deaths have been recorded so far. As temperatures drop momentarily before ramping up again in mid-August, it's clear that Britain is not ready for this chronic crisis. Personally, I think it's glaringly obvious how bad we are at coping with heat. Brits love a holiday, and we travel for the sun, but this is not fun. What makes this particularly fascinating is that the combination of extreme temperatures and high humidity in Europe is different from the dry summer experienced by Australia. And it matters that the hottest days are getting earlier into June. If you take a step back and think about it, the UK's inability to cope with heat is a symptom of a deeper issue: our failure to prepare for the chronic crisis of climate change. In my opinion, the UK has left it too late to fully prepare for the effects of global warming. The irony is that after devastating floods across the UK in June 2007, communities like Toll Bar, South Yorkshire, were hit by a mini-heatwave. This highlights the fact that communities don't recover from these events; instead, they find ways to live alongside the constant threat. One thing that immediately stands out is that people in these communities were well ahead of the realization that climatic change would be something they lived with, not outran. What many people don't realize is that the effects of global warming are now irreversible, and we need to adapt to this new reality. The UK's reliance on imported goods has left it particularly vulnerable to the collapse of food security, as predicted by James Lovelock. The truth is that schools, courts, hospitals, water pipes, roads, and reservoirs need a wholesale program of rebuild and future-proofing, but no government has the political will to make it all happen. This is despite the fact that national public health bodies have been urging politicians to get better at having difficult conversations for over two decades. The good news is that there are things that make a difference. Excess deaths related to heat are tracked by the UKHSA and Office of National Statistics, and last year showed some promising signs that interventions were starting to work. People over 85 were disproportionately affected in 2024's fatality analysis. Since then, there have been public information campaigns, cooling spaces, and telemedicine, meaning potential patients can stay at home. The work to keep Britain fed will get harder and harder, as Lovelock predicted, where Gaia would really make herself felt. However, colleagues in emergency response and public health have found their work much easier to sell this year. Once you have a few heatwaves, it is easier to make the case for improved funding for tackling wildfires and our 'heat wave planning' meetings are well attended year-round. These now run alongside the ones for flooding. Emergency planners do our homework and attend international briefings on the Godzilla El Nino that will continue to mean 2026 is extra spicy on the weather front. In my perspective, the UK's vulnerability to climate change highlights the need for a wholesale program of rebuild and future-proofing. The work to keep Britain fed will get harder and harder, and we need to adapt to this new reality. The UK's reliance on imported goods has left it particularly vulnerable to the collapse of food security. The UK needs to invest in its food-growing capacity and reduce its reliance on imported goods. This will require a significant shift in policy and investment, but it is essential if we are to ensure food security for the future. In conclusion, Britain's heatwaves are a symptom of a deeper issue: our failure to prepare for the chronic crisis of climate change. The UK needs to invest in its food-growing capacity and reduce its reliance on imported goods. This will require a significant shift in policy and investment, but it is essential if we are to ensure food security for the future. The UK also needs to invest in its infrastructure and future-proof it for the effects of global warming. This will require difficult conversations and difficult decisions, but it is essential if we are to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens.
