Alpena's sestercentennial celebrations kicked off with a bang, quite literally, as two new sculptures were dedicated at the Alpena County Courthouse and Alpena City Hall. The event was a testament to the city's commitment to public art and its rich history. The centerpiece of the celebration was 'The Eagle has Landed' by artist Ann Gildner, a 2300-pound masterpiece of raw metal, stainless steel, brass, and raw steel, adorned with over 600 individually welded feathers. It's a stunning addition to the city's Art Vision Alpena project, which has transformed the 20-mile Bi-Path into a cultural hub with over 100 installations, adding an estimated $250,000 in aesthetic value. The sculpture's location at the courthouse, now Fremont Park, is a nod to the city's past, as Alpena was originally known as Fremont before its name was changed in 1871. Gildner's journey into art and welding began at Alpena Community College and Moran Iron Works, and she expressed her joy in being part of this project.
The other sculpture, 'In the Eye of the Beholder' by Autumn Bildson, is a Thunderbird-inspired piece that symbolizes Native American traditions of strength, protection, and nature. It incorporates symbols of happiness, everlasting life, wisdom, and friendship, reflecting Bildson's personal values and the influence of her grandmother. The dedication ceremony, which included a reading of the Declaration of Independence, highlighted the Bi-Path's role as a lasting public investment, promoting recreation, accessibility, and community connection. City Manager Rachel Smolinski emphasized the trail's integral part in Alpena's daily life, serving as a symbol of the community's commitment to public space and cultural engagement.
